So...after not drawing or submitting anything for over a year (feels unreal) - I decided to draw again. And instead of doing what I've always done, I took that next step:
Colours, background - a complete picture instead of a pencil sketch on a white page! This is also my first proper DIGITAL PAINTING!
Painted entirely from scratch with my trusty, TINY Wacom. No references used. I'm still getting used to it, and Photoshop 7.0. I've been using 6.0 for I don't know how long, and it doesn't have any proper painting tools. PS 7.0 does, however!
It's like learning to walk again. Slowly. Might as well take those extra steps and get going!
...and because this is a huge step for me, coming out of the darkness, any and ALL criticism is incredibly welcome.
The face is great. For it all I can recommend is darkening the shading, since he is indeed in a deep darkness. The face loses alot of expression and such..since the shading blends in with the skintone.
The hands don't seem to be jointed, and look "blobby". The fingernails are excellent though, people seem to forget those alot unless it's a female.
I can tell you're used to painting at least partially just from looking at this, and you did very well for using 6 (7's brushes are so much better). I hope you don't mind me not sugarcoating this but from what I remember you're a pretty stand-up guy.
I actually DID use Photoshop 7, but I haven't explored those awesome brushes you mentioned yet! Hehe! I agree to the darker shading as well, the original piece was much too bright and I already toned it down several notches. I'll have to make sure I don't sissy-shade next time like I usually do in faces such as this one.
And about the hands...what can I say. I regret not putting more work into them, the hand holding down the branch especially. It's only real function was to fill up the otherwise empty space, anyway.
